On File Save, Word doesn't stop saving until drive runs out of space

From time to time one of my word docs becomes corrupted and when I try to
save it, Word keeps saving and saving until the target drive fills up. It
just happened to a 1meg file. It seems corrupt in seveal areas. The only
sure way of saving it is to copy it to a new file as unformatted text.

I have the problem in both Word 97 and Word 2000SP1. The recent occurrence
is with Word 2000Sp1.

Other files are fine though.

Thanks Suzanne.

I had luck with saving as HTML, exiting, restarting Word, reading the HTML
in and saving as doc. Now I have large black bands in several parts of the
document. The bands are neither character formatting, borders, shading, nor
pictures. (Picture placeholders=off has no effect).

I've exported to RTF for more visibility.

The document ends with one of these black bands. So when I have some time
I'll have to edit the doc and reload. When I copy selected areas containing
the black bands to a new doc some disappear.
In general, though, the bands completely disappear in PAGE View. I only see
them In normal view.

Unfortunately, many of the practices listed in your referred doc
characterize my use of Word. I'm doomed to create corrupted documents.

Hi Beth,

I've tried the picture placeholder thing. Didn't help, but interesting.
I'll try the other items. The doc is certainly corrupt and several of my
practices can cause it. Among others, I avidly use Document Map.
My response to Suzanne was a fairly complete telling of the current status.
There's alot I don't know about Word.

My latest question is why black bands that obscure good text appear in
Normal view but not in Page view (this after exporting to HTML and reading
back into Word).

Could this be a display issue? Have you updated your video driver?

No problem on another another computer, though it is Win97 Word 97, and the
problem is on a Win2k, Word 2000 machine. Hey, I'll give it a shot. I've
been wanting to upgrade the driver anyway. I just flashed the mobo.
Thanks.
