On installation - program has performed an illegal operation

I've just installed a copy of Publisher 97 on a friend's computer running
under Windows 98.

The installation completed without a hitch.

However when I click on the publisher icon the program won't run and I get
the message that says it has performed an illegal action and has to close?

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Can you open Publisher in safe mode? If you can then the printer driver is probably
causing problems.

I tried this but sadly to no effect.

In my desperation I found that the program runs ok from the CD by running
MSPUB.EXE so I deleted this file on the hard disk and copied another copy
from the CD. (I had already removed and re-installed it 3 times) It works!
I don't know why it wouldn't run from the installed copy.

There is only one slight problem now and that is when you start Publisher 97
now you are met with a dialogue box saying "Publisher cannot open this file.
This is not a publisher file." but if I click on the OK button everything is
fine?

I think it must be a corrupted template is there an equivalent of word's
normal.dot in publisher that I can delete and create new one?

Thanks,

Noel
