One project leader need to create a specific link between 3
predecessors tasks and 1 successor task.
He want that the successor task as soon as the first predecessor is
finished.

How can he do that ?

Based solely on your short description, I would say that the first
predecessor is the only real predecessor. So I would only link the first
predecessor to the successor task. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,
Let me elaborate it
One project leader need to create a specific link between 3
predecessors tasks and 1 successor task.
He want that the successor task as soon as the first predecessor is
finished.
For example

Task name start date Finish date predecessors
task1 6/12/2009 6/15/2009
task2 6/12/2009 6/16/2009
task3 6/16/2009 6/20/2009 task1,task2

So by MSP feature task3 will start on 6/16/2009 but the project
manager wants to start on 6/15/2009.
Is there any feature or setting in MSP by which we can do it. Please
detail How can he do that ?

Thanks for your answer in advance.

What your project manager wants to do cannot be done. Simply stated, the
first predecessor is the ONLY true predecessor tasks. The other task, which
the PM says is a predecessor, IS NOT a real true predecessor since it do not
drive the successor task's Start date. So, I think it's time for you to
tell the PM that he/she is asking for the impossible, and that he/she needs
to rethink the logic of the project. Hope this helps.

Hi,

This can only be done through resource leveling. This is in fact not a
rpedecesor problem (by nature a task can only start when aldeliverables
needed for it are there i.e. when all rpedecessors are finished.
Generally this type of problem when detailded is that either one of the
three "predecessors" frees up a resource that will start working on the
"successor" task.
This can be solved by Leveling, not with predecessor logic.

Thanks for "jumping into" this thread to help. I'm teaching here in NYC
this week, so I only have a little time to answer posts before or after
class. Your help is appreciated! Thanks. :)

Hi Dale,

So often in the general NG we have to say "better ask this in the Server NG"
and behold! Here is a question for the general NG hidden in the Server NG!

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your response.
I wanted to clarify one more point on this . suppose in the example
given above by me,the tasks 1 & 2 are support calls dependent on some
other group and the PM does not know that when will the task be
finished but has given a tentative finish date to these task 1 &
task2. Now he wants that this task3 should start as soon as any of the
above task is finished. Is it possible for him to do this thing in the
plan.
Please help.
Thanks for your response in advance
