My OneDrive has gradually become difficult to manage because I’ve accumulated multiple copies of the same photos, documents, PDFs, and videos. It probably happened over time through different devices and repeated uploads, so I didn’t notice the problem until the storage started becoming cluttered.
The biggest concern isn't finding a duplicate; it’s deciding which copy is safe to remove. A filename isn't always enough to determine whether two files are identical. For example, I might have two files called “Project Report” where one is an older version and the other contains recent changes. Removing the wrong one could create a bigger problem than having duplicate files in the first place.
For a few hundred files, I would probably start by sorting folders and comparing file names and sizes manually. Photos can sometimes be easier to identify because identical images often have the same dimensions and file size. Documents require more attention because different versions can look almost the same while containing different content.
For larger OneDrive accounts, a tool such as SysInfo OneDrive Duplicate File Finder Tool could make the identification stage easier by scanning the storage and grouping files that appear to be duplicates. I would still review the results rather than automatically deleting everything detected.
A OneDrive Duplicate Remover can be helpful when there are thousands of unnecessary copies, especially if duplicates are scattered across different folders.
