onenote 07 in vista error: unable to start.

cannot start onenote07 in vista, an error window appears :
OneNote is unable to start. This may be caused by insufficient
hard drive space or by insufficient write permissions for OneNote's cache
files in your user settings folder. Try to delete any unnecessary files from
your computer and then try starting OneNote again. If this message persists,
contact your system administrator.<

I have not changed my account and OneNote was working ok in this machine, the
hard drive is not full.

I search in google and seems that others have had this same problem but
there are no visible solutions. I tried restore but unfortunately even the
oldest restoration point couldnt help.

The only workaround to this issue (and another related with windows help and
windows search) I have found, is to create a new administrative user account,
in this new one everything seems to work fine again. Of course now you have
to move your documents, mails, etc from the old to the new one.

I'm now getting the same problem. Bought a new computer a couple of weeks ago
and installed one note. Was working fine untill a couple of days ago when I
started to get the same error message "0x4C8". Not sure if was after I
installed the offic service pack. Tried deleting the cache, but that didn't
work.
It does load my files, and I can work in onenote if I ignore the popup
error. Sometimes (not often) it will load without the error and I think
everything is ok. But the next time I open it up it pops again.

It's on just one computer with the files on my local hard drive.
If I open up OneNote I will get the error message about 3 out of 5 times. I
can work with onenote if I ignore the error and the notebooks are fine and
save correctly.

I was getting the error message "OneNote is unable to start" with the
Error Code 0x5. I was able to workaround this issue by going to the
Microsoft Office/Office12 directory on my "C" Drive, right clicking
the file "onenote.exe" and selecting "run as as administrator".
Program then opened fine. It seems that many programs (for me anyhow
running Vista Ultimate SP1) only work properly if I right click then
run as administrator, even though I am an administrator.

I have the same problem. Error code: 0x4c8. Started within the last
couple of months. If I run OneNote as adminstrator it works fine.
Apparently the problem is the rights on the cache file.

Question: Where is the cache file stored? If I can find this
location, then I can change the rights for that directory.

Thanks, Will

The cache file location can be found under Tools - Options - Save.
Changing the Cache file location to a directory that has not rights
restrictions solves the problem.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the Carbonite Backup software I have
installed.
I unistalled it and everything seems to be working okay without error
messages.

I had this same OneNote error message occur this week on my Vista 32-bit, SP2 laptop with Office Pro 2007. I was also unable to open my default PST in Outlook 2007. I did many of the things listed on this thread, but the thing that fixed this for me was the following:

1) Open Windows Explorer
2) Navigate to C:\Users\<username>
3) Open the properties for that folder
4) CLEAR he Read-only attribute checkbox
5) Click APPLY
6) Chose 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files'
7) Click OK - wait several minutes.

After this, BOTH Outlook 2007 and OneNote began working again. I wish I knew WHY the read-only bit was set, but unfortunately I don't.

Are you using an account with sufficient permissions to the drive?

I'm assuming your hard drive isn't full. Did OneNote work before on this
machine or has it never worked?
