OneNote and 2 PCs

PeterG

Hi,
I'm resonable new to OneNote which has been working well on my desk-top PC
for some Months now. I’m now considering adding OneNote to a UMPC (Windows XP
based) for going on the road.
I.e.my preferred vision is to download a copy of the desktop OneNote files
to the UMPC prior to leaving the office. Work on the files while on the road
and when returning to the office; “uploadâ€/sync the two versions of OneNote
so that I do not have to re-do typing. Is there an option to do this or
something similar?
Doing this with Ms Mobile would also be an option, however prefer formfactor
of UMPC.
Thank you in advance.
Regards, Peter

Peter,

According to your description, you can do "synchronization" with One Note
files.
What you need to do, is to copy your OneNote files from your PC to UMPC and
after you "back" to your PC again, just copy back these files from UMPC to
PC.
This can be manualy, or in some cases I use third party file synchronization
software, where I just synchronize files and older ones are overwritten.
But that's a hassle and it's manual work. Let's see if anybody suggest more
advanced way on doing so.

I was expecting to do that with Groove, but didn't manage to make it
working.
Also, One Note have some notebook sharing feature. But again, haven't tried
that.

Either way, I'll also keep an eye on this topic to hear something more
sofisticated :)

Yes. ON has a fantastic synching feature built-in.
It works with an UMPC as with any other PC.

Basics:
1.) The notebook-files are kept on *one* machine only, in this case on
the desktop PC, in a shared directory.

2.) One does not store the files on the second device. They are opened
there "shared" from the desktop PC.
ON then works with it's cache.
As long as the two PCs are connected (LAN or WLAN) the data are synched
automatically.

3.) When the PCs are disconnected, one can work on both devices locally.
As soon as the devices are re-connected any changes made in between will
be synched.
Doing this with Ms Mobile would also be an option, however prefer
formfactor of UMPC.

There is a possibility to work with a PDA or a smart-phone (running
under Windows Mobile) too.
But ON Mobile is rather limited.
So using a UMPC would be ways better as you'd then have the full
functionality of ON on the road.

If any further questions, pls ask.

Warning to ALL:
Do NOT follow Marius' suggestions.

Synching Yes. But not a file-synching basis.

files from UMPC to PC.

Sorry, Marius, NO! NO!
A really serious misunderstanding on your side :-( :-(
This is not a proper way of doing things.
Working this way for sure is not a way to be followed.
It's a way to spoil everything.
This can be manualy, or in some cases I use third party file
synchronization software, where I just synchronize files and older
ones are overwritten. But that's a hassle and it's manual work.

If one uses the proper techniques (pls see my previous posting) no
manual work is needed at all. OneNote's unique synching feature does it
all automatically.
And the usage of synchronization software on the ON-notebook-files is a
true NoNo.
I was expecting to do that with Groove, but didn't manage to make it
working.

Groove is one of the things not to be used, the same with
"Offline-Files".
Also, One Note have some notebook sharing feature. But again,
haven't tried that.

That's why … :-( :-(
Do yourself a favor and check it out.
And quit having notebook-files on more than just *one* PC.

Thanks for commenting my post.
Looks like Ben M.Schor was writing on a very same time I did mine post. He
provided really easy solution.
Finally, I will use my OneNote in all of my computers without a hassle.

One option not mentioned in any of the replies is to use a memory key/thumb
drive to sync between multiple computers.
Its automatic just by plugging in the usb drive, once you have set it up in
OneNote.

Yes, this another option too.

To the OP (PeterG).
using an USB-stick (or an SD-card) needs a setup of the data-storage
similar to what I explained in my first posting:
The notebook-files have to be stored on the stick only (not on one of
the PCS involved) and they have to opened from the stick.

Peter,
Responding to an old thread but if you see this it will help. I use the USB
stick to "sync". In reality, the files live on the stick, and when I attach
it to the other computer it updates the changes made to any specific
notebooks, sections, or pages. I like this method because I have trouble
making my home network work 100% of the time. I may end up with ON on a third
computer at my classroom where there is no chance the units will see each
other over a network, anyway.

You must "change the file location" of each ON2007 file (by Notebook, I
believe) to be resident on the chosen USB stick. Right click the Notebook
name bar in the left-hand pane and choose "Properties" There's a button in
there somewhere...

Once this is done you are always working with a "proxy" on the computer not
the file itself. I guess that I can back up the stick, but I don't know if
the files are hardware-aware, which means back up won't neceesarily put me
immediately back in business if I lose the USB stick itself...

I am posting another questions which has to be resolved for such a process:
How do I make the tags and other prefs also follow me to the other machine?
That's a separate post today, 1/7.
