OneNote loses focus

Andrew Oliner

Is anyone else having this problem? When my tablet PC has been inactive for
a few minutes, OneNote changes the title bar to include the words
"read-only", and seems to switch out of Pen Mode.

When I go to start writing again it generally switches back ok, but not 100%
of the time.

Also, (may be related) sometimes when I am writing in OneNote, suddenly an
Hourglass appears, and I am unable to write. This can go on for a lengthy
period of time, sometimes one minute or more. I thought that it might be a
memory issue, so I bought an additional gig of RAM (total now 1.5 GB), but
it still happens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Might be a memory issues, Andrew You're running Windows XP and the Tablet
PC Edition 2005, correct? If so, have you downloaded and installed the
"memory leak" fix:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...54-14e3-408e-8c63-0a382e8d9239&DisplayLang=en

Also, with over a gig of RAM, if you use Hibernation, you may want to follow
up on this, too: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095/en-us The hot fix
is available for a free telephone call, as described in the KB article.

Thanks. I didn't know about the memory leak. I'm kind of surprised that
Windows Update didn't push it out to me. Are there any other "mandatory"
fixes that I should install?

I have seen information re the hibernate fix, but I haven't experienced that
problem, so I'm reluctant to install it.

I don't know yet whether the leak fix solved my problem. So far, so good,
but it's an unpredictable problem, as to when it shows up.

Thanks,

Andy

 Unpredictable is right. If you're running more than a GB of RAM (and
use Hibernation), then you should install that update. It is for all
computers running more than a gig of RAM, not just Tablet PCs. Answering
which updates you might need is a bit like trying to read your mind. For
instance, there's an update for Office 2003, if you're running that, which
adds more context tagging (the input locations for text) so the Tablet Input
Panel will be alerted to the presence:

If you have further questions about your Tablet PC, I'd suggest posting
where Tablets are supported, in the microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc
newsgroup.

The read-only issue is normal -- it's supposed to do that to enable sharing.
And when you go back to that page it should return write access to you.

I'm having the same problem - ie switching out of pen mode and
occasional 100% CPU for 2-5 minutes, which can be brutal during a
lecture. One Note-SP2, Office 2003-SP2, Win2K-SP4 all fully patched
with all available security updates. Fujitsu 3400 tablet (P3-400, 128MB
Ram). Is the memory leak fix only for XP-Table? Or is there one for
Win2K?
