Onmouseover gifs slow to respond

In FP 2000 I find that gifs with a rollover image swap
applied to them are very slow to swap, as if they are not
even coming from the cache. Any ideas?

How big is the gif??
How much other stuff is going on in the page??
Are you using a preload script to preload the images??

Is it slow on every rollover? Are the file sizes "reasonable?" Are you
using a preload script to make sure the files are already in the cache?
