Open a project - takes forever. For you too?

We use Server and Project 2002 Pro extensively in our
shop. We have probably 60 active projects, but rarely are
4 open at the same time. Our hardware is top of the line
Dell servers and our LAN is fast for most applications.
We have probably 300 resources in the enterprise resource
pool, and probably 75 on any one project's team.

With this sketchy data let me ask if your wait times on
opening a project take you at least 11-15 minutes? Ours
does and I can't tell what it is. We had the equipment
checked by the Dell consultants and they agree that it is
not the boxes (one app server, one data server).
Supposedly the IT guys checked the routers and we have a
lot of capability there given the amount of data
transmitting, so they say it is not that.

Any ideas? Is this normal?

Thanks Matt

I forgot to mention that the number of tasks seems to make
very little difference. We average from 10 tasks to 600
tasks.

Hi Matt,

Unless I misunderstood your post. It sounds like SQL is running on one box and Project,Sharepoint & IIS is on another.

1- What is speed between the clients and the server? 10 or 100
2- What is the speed between the servers?
3- How many NIC's are in the SQL box?
4- What is the average number of lines in the project?
5- How long does it take to publish a project?
6- While one person is publishing, how is the response time for other users accessing the server?

We had exactly the same problem - we have around 140
projects, none of them more than 2000 or so tasks. The
longest I took to open one plan was 2 hours 45 mins!!
Don't even mention saving!!

We have upgraded to Project Server 2003 which takes
considerably less time - now around 1 to 5 minutes. We
have kept the same sort of structure as before but it has
been a vast improvement, although we never really worked
out why it was impossibly slow in teh first place.

Hi Sally,

Do your remember anything about your hardware config OR is it all history now?
