open access2003 files in access97 or access2000

i wish to continue to use windows ME as my OS, therefore i cannot use
office2003. office2000 or office97 are acceptable - can i open access 2003
files in them though? access97 does not allow me now, but maybe there is a
fix to this annoying bug. it seems from the microsoft website that
access2000 fileformat is the access2003 and access2002 defaults, but i wish
to verify before i proceed...

First of all, it isn't a "bug." While it's possible for later versions to be
made compatible with previous versions, it is not possible to make older
versions compatible with, as yet, developed features of a future version.

You can convert the later versions to Access 97 format, however, if you have
access to one of the later versions.

well, i guess as the saying goes, it's a "feature," and i suppose i'm spoiled
by word2003 just openning up without sequelae in word97, for example. i am
aware of saving within access2003 as access97 format, but the ambiguity from
the ms website i wish to clear is now this (you answered the office97 part, i
thank you!) - can i merely open an access2003 file within access2000, or, do
i need to specialy save / export / convert the access2003 file first? (the
ms website only states that i can do this for access2002 and implies
access2000, but not explicitly clear.) thanks again, i appreciate it! dean

By default, the file format used by Access 2003 is the Access 2000 format,
but there is a separate Access 2003 file format as well. Access 2000 can
(usually) work with an Access 2003 file in Access 2000 format, but not with
files in Access 2003 format.

The reason Word 97 can open Word 2003 files is that there was no file format
change in Word between 97 and 2003. If there had been, then it's extremely
doubtful that Word 97 would be able to. Few applications are built with
prescience...
