Open file dialogue box very, very slow

Hello and help please!

I have a problem with the open file browser dialogue box in every Office
application.

If I click on the Look In dropdown, it takes about 12 seconds before the
tree is displayed. Clicking on a folder usually takes about 5 seconds before
its contents are displayed. Conversely, clicking the Up One Level button
responds immediately, even if it's my first action after opening the dialogue
box.
Nowhere else does this problem appear - Windows Explorer behaves normally.
Defragmenting the disk repeatedly appears to make no difference.

Yesterday, after a complete HDD reinstall, everything was fine.
This morning I find this problem. If it's any clue, I noticed that the
"Loading your personal settings" routine after Windows logon has also got
rather slow.

PC is AMD 64, 1.5G RAM, HDD 80% free running Office 2003 under Win XP Pro SP1.

Any suggestions very gratefully received.
