Open file- Look in box will not allow changing file choices...

When one is already in Word, clisck open file, try
changing the file from "My Documents" folder (default) to
any other choice, it "jumps back" to the My Documents and
does not allow to browse down to another file or folder to
click on. If one hold the right mouse button down it
results in a WinWord caused a Page Fault Exception
scenario.
Anyone seen a solution to this annoying problem? Only way
to open a file is from Windows Explorer...
Running Win 98 SE, Word 2000, Office Pro 2000.
