"open office document" list view columns

Mr Major Thorburn

Office 2000 SP-3 when opening an office document in list view the columns
have suddenly shifted wider where before they were closer with the folders
and file names being truncated terminated in ...
Anyone any idea how we can control this 'feature'

The width of the column is determined by the longest file name in the
folder. If you're seeing truncated file names then I'd say you have
some long file names. Try renaming the truncated file names and use
fewer characters and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Major,

You can adjust the width of the columns by holding your
mouse down over the 'crack' between the columns and dragging.
Double clicking on the 'crack' (space) will enlarge a
column to autofit the widest entry in that column.

Bob, there are no 'crack's in the list view and if I select the detail view
and change the column width it is not reflected in the list view.

Beth, I am sorry but I have seen the same file list being shown with ...
trunctation and later no trunctation without doing anything to the file names.
Is there any way at all to control the width of the view columns?
Regards, Major.

What view are you using? Are you using the List view? Details view?
Check the View menu to the left of the Tools menu in the File/Open

I reviewed the thread and I don't think you ever mentioned the
operating system you are using. I'm wondering if that may factor into
what you are seeing.

Sorry, the system is running XP with SP2, office is 2000 with SP-3.

I have just looked on my own system at home and noticed that under the
normal folder list view there is an option to select details. In that option
you can select the number of pixels used to display each column. That allows
you to display a partial file or subfolder name. Just what I wanted.

I am running Office 2003 here so I will try the column display size option
at work tomorrow.

Regards, Major.
