"Open" or "Save As" locks up Word and Excel

Whenever I use these options from the menus, Word and Excel will not open the
files or save them.

Your problem is almost certainly a recent Window update.

For immediate purposes, go to the Add/Remove programs control panel and
click on the box to show updates (top right). Down near the bottom are
Windows updates. You are looking for "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)". Unistall this.

Keep reading these newsgroups and search for that number. You will see other
things you can do as well.

The update works for some people, including me, without problems for others
it causes the problems you are seeing.

Hi,

Seems there's a problem with the Windows latest updates. Uninstalling the
KB908531
update should fix the problem for now.

Cheers

A Microsoft employee posted this advice a few minutes ago:

"There is now a KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165)
addressing the issues that customers are reporting with MS06-015. It
provides information on the cause and what the customer can do to
eliminate the problems they're seeing without removing the security
update."

Jay,

Your suggested solution worked. Went into the registry, added the
DWORD, restarted my system for good measure, and I was able to work in
Excel again (after installing the XP security updates, I was having an
issue performing a 'Save As' whereby the program would lock up -- the
suggested fix worked out this problem).

Don't know what happened with this update this time around. Before
using the fix, I thought it was a virus since Word and Excel both asked
for my EULA on April 15th of all days. Seemed eloquent for virus makers
(who should all be SHOT on sight). Reinstalled my program from the CD
to no avail. It wasn't until I ran a search of the symptoms on Google
that I happened upon your suggested solution.

With all the great things that Microsoft develops, when they mess up,
it can potentially cause a huge mess. Nonetheless, I appreciate your
help and I thank you again!!!

I did as you suggested but a screen came up during the wizard tht said Setup
detected the following programs on your computer Security Updae for Windows
xp(KB911562) and (KB912812). If (KB908531) is removed, these programs might
not run properly. What's this about and will I be in trouble if I had said
yes? I said no and exited.

Other suggestions have surfaced as I predicted. It's a problem of the
interaction between third-party software (notably HP) and a recent security
update to Windows. See
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...inetexplorer.ie6.browser/msg/094143b42d0c3ca2
and http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165. The message gives clearer
instructions for doing what Microsoft is recommending.

You are the MAN! I deleted the kb 908531 security update and all is well,
except Norton does not like it that I have disabled the windows updates.

C

Charles Kenyon

Don't disable them, but make it so that Windows notifies you of the update.
Today they are releasing a version set to allow the known software that
causes the problem to operate.
