open saved documents

When I try to open my saved document it appears in code. How can I open it
if the file has been corrupted?

Can you describe the "code"? Does it look like the example in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm, or is it all squares or
ÿ characters or what?

Pop up --"File conversion $bruary Select encoding" Unicode (UTF-8) is
highlighted. Then instead of text there are squares and characters. Thanks
for any help.

Either the file is not actually a Word document or it is corrupt.
