opening a doc from word 2003 application opens, but not the doc?

When i open a .doc in word 2003, the application opens, but the file is not
loaded. How come? Once word 2003 is opened, i can open the file, but the
application needs to be open.

because of that i cannot either open the .doc attachements from outlook 2003.
