Opening a FrontPage web that requires authentication with FrontPage 2000 under W2K...

Hi.

I've created a publishing web on a W2K server. I've restricted access on the
physical folder using Access Control Lists on the Security tab. When I open the
web from an XP machine FrontPage 2K prompts for a user ID/password but works
perfectly. When I open the web from a Windows 2000 machine I get an error in
FrontPage 2K that says:

"Cannot access folder 'http://.../publish'. It is probably on an unavailable
volume or is protected with a password."

and I can't go any further.

Isn't it possible to open a FrontPage web that requires authentication with
FrontPage 2000 under Windows 2000? Are there any considerations under Windows
2000?

Thanks in advance,
Vince C.

Hi Vince......

I can at least answer one of your questions.... I have a Win 2000 pro
machine and I have no problems like you are describing.

Best to you.....

Thanks, Tom.

The publishing folder can be accessed only by people that are authorized web
authors. Web authors should be able to read any document others have published
but to modify their own only. What I have done was to set specific permissions
on the publishing folder:
- administrators have full control (on the root and below)
- a group called "Web Admins" has modify rights (on the root and below)
- a group called "Web Authors" has read-only rights but can create folders in
the root
- the creator/owner of an object has full rights.

I've also granted "modify" rights on all "_vti_xxx" folders to group "Web
Authors".

Is there something I missed? Have you also setup specific permissions on your
publishing folder? How did you manage?

Thanks.

Thanks to both Tom and Tom :).

I've just discovered I could setup access rights from FrontPage client... (yes,
I'm a FrontPage beginner). I noticed I got this error because I setup different
access rights on subfolders. For instance, I wanted web authors to have
read-only access on all but their own folders, which they could write to.

Apparently the access rights you set on a FrontPage Web are the same for every
subfolders. What I'd have wanted is more or less the same level of security as
Windows 2000 "Document and Settings": nobody can write in any folder but his/her
ones.

Is there a way to achieve that? Otherwise I can cope with it. I'll just make
recommendations to my group of authors.

Tanks again,
Vince C.

Many people use NTFS permissions folder by folder.

Right but when I do that I get an "unexpected error" when FrontPage is run on
people's machine with restricted rights.
