opening attachments errors

I have AOL6.0 and Win 98SE. When I download a *.doc I get
an error message that I performed an illegal operation.
The error message says wordpadcaused an invalid fault in
module mswrd832.cnv.
Any idea what I need to do to correct this?

This problem seems to be between AOL and Windows (WordPad) and to have
nothing to do with Word, which is the subject of this newsgroup.
