Opening .doc problem?

T

Titanl9

Just encountered a problem with opening Word.doc files from
Outlook emails and clicking, in an Explorer window or My
Document window. Word opens up fine, just no document.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ti

Hello Titan,

This kind of issues often occurs in Excel rather than in Word, so we may
need more time to perform some troubleshooting steps: I assume that Word
Launches when you double-click the Word document, but the document is not
be opened. Am I right?

Also, I find that the error message you mentioned in other newsgroup
doesn't seem to the exact error message? Would you tell us the exact error
message? I assume that the exact error message is "The systemcan not find
the file specified". Is it correct?

Does this issue occur in Excel?

Now, we can try the following steps to see if the problem can be resolved:

Step 1: Launch Word in Safe Mode
=============
1. Click Start-->Run
2. Type "WINWORD /a" and click OK

This step can help to isolate the problem from Macro and add-ins in Word.

Step 2:
==============
1. Click Start-->Run
2. Type "WINWORD /r" and click OK

Step 3: Rename or delete the Registry Data and Options
=============
1. Click Start-->Run
2. Type "Regedit" and click Ok
3. Extend the registry tree and go to
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\"
4. Backup and then delete the registry folder "Data" and "Options"

Step 4: Disable Any third-party Antivirus Programs.
==============
For example, if you have installed Norton Anti-virus, the Norton Office
Plug-in may cause many problems, such as preventing Office documents from
opening and causing Word/Excel to crash on exit. In order to disable it,
please refer to the following article:

329820 Latest Information About How to Use Microsoft Office with the Norton
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329820

Do these steps help? We look forward to your progress.

I followed your advice step by step and nothing changed. Also,
when I click on an Excel file nothing happens. Using either
program I am able to open any file from their respective tool
bars "File" open, select file and the file opens.

The dialog says: "The system can not find the file specified"

It's as though the file names are invisible or not recognized.

Hello Titan,

Based on my understanding, this issue also occur in Excel on your side? Am
I right?

If so, please perform the following steps to see if they can resolve the
problem in Excel:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the General tab.
3. Click to clear the Ignore other applications check box, and then click
OK.
After you do this, you should be able to open workbooks by double-clicking
them in Windows Explorer.

For more information, please refer to the following KB article:

211494 Excel opens without displaying a workbook
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=211494

For the same issue in Word, please assist us in gathering the following
information for the further tests:
1. What's the Word version on your side?
2. Do you have the administartor permission on this machine?
3. Does this issue occur if you create a new user profile?

We look forward to your progress.

When opening a .doc from within Outlook, I was getting "The
system can not find the file specified" as I stated above. That
is no longer the case since talking with Microsoft support
yesterday. After trying the suggestions they offered and online
for 3hrs I now get the followoing dialog box and they could not
fix the problem, so it's still an open case. :(

"Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these
suggesstions. Check file permissions for the document or drive;
Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space; Open
the file iwth the TextRecovery coverter. then a button with
"Show Help>>."

As you suggested I applied the steps to Excel and was still
unable to open an .xls file in explorer window. I reiterate I
am able to open the same .xls file in Excel through "File" open
functions and this is also true with Word.

My version is Office Professional 2003 SP1 for both Word and
Excel. I have no problems with any of the other Office
associated applications.

Hello Titan,

As all the steps above can not resolve your problem and I mentioned that
you have uninstalled and re-installed Office, I suggest that we can perform
a clean re-install Office to resolve this problem. To do this, please
perform the following steps:

1. Uninstall Office from Add/Remove Programs.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D

3. Run the utility and remove the Office entry from the list.
4. Reinstall Office and re-apply the latest update for it.

For more information about the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, please

I have 2 Outlook profiles with very large .PST files, including
many email folders in each profile. I've uninstalled all office

To that end, will "Save my settings wizard" allow me to recreat

Jacky Gu [MSFT]

Hello Titan,

As your question is related to Outlook, I have consulted our Outlook
specialist to get some valuable information.
Below are the two scenarios:

Scenario 1:
===========
If you use POP3 protocol in Outlook, we only need to backup the .PST files
to keep your folders structure in Outlook.

Scenario 2:
===========
If you use Exchange, please refer to the following KB article:

287070 OL2002: How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287070

NOTE. This article is also applied to Outlook 2003. Also, you may refer to
some steps in this KB article when you are in scenario 1.

For the user profiles and settings in Outlook 2003, I recommend that we can
use USMT tool. The USMT tool is used to migrate user files and settings
during deployments of Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP, and the latest
version 2.6 can be downloaded from the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4af2d2c9-f16c-4c52-
a203-8daf944dd555&DisplayLang=en

Based on my tests, we can use the USMT to migrate all email account
settings (For example, Cached Exchange Mode, RPC over HTTP, Leave a copy on
the server option, etc), even including the additional Exchange mailbox. In
additional, this tool is very simple to use. Therefore, I thought it is a
very cool tool that we can recommend partners for their migration process.

In the old computer, we should only type the following command: "Scanstate
<datapath> /i:migapp.inf". In the new computer, we should only type the
following command: "loadstate <datapath>"

The following articles provide more detailed information about this tool:

User State Migration in Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/usermigr.mspx#E
EAA

Note: In the Microsoft download website, system requirement is written as
below. I have only tested in the Windows 2000/XP and it runs smoothly.

Also, I recommend you refer to the following KB article:
826809 Description and use of the Save My Settings Wizard
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=826809

Save my settings Wizard can backup and restored most setting in Office
2003. However, I recommend you perform the two steps above first.

After the backup work, please perform the clean re-install.

Hope this helps.

If you are also using Norton AV then go to Norton Options and in the
Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

This is a known conflict in opening Office documents outside the

Thanks Beth, But I considered that possibility early on before
using Windows install clean up to take all office products off
my computer, then reinstalling them. That didn't work so I
uninstalled Norton and Zone Alarm and zippo.

I've went so far as to use msconfig/selective all services
except 3 key ones and still wasn't able to fix it.

In safe/network mode all works fine. So, if I take into
considering all the actions I've tried to date, I believe the
problem stems from a corrupt Windows XP pro file that loads.

Which is also the reason I cross posted earlier on.

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered. We've encountered numerous
situations where this was the case.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

NAV was installed, I removed NAV along with Zone Alarms when
this problem surfaced thinking one or the other might be
contributing. Also, before restalling the above, I installed
Windows XP Pro SP2 hoping it might affect this problem. But,
nope, nada, zippo. Install went like a charm, but the problem
is still there and real annoying because it's making it harder
to conduct business.

Since not being able to solve this issue, I also reinstalled NAV
and ZoneAlarms for safety sake, since I receive 2000 emails with
..docs attached wkly.

I've spoken with a few more folks at Microsoft, up to case-level
4 and nobody has a clue. Now their talking about sending it to
research. Don't have a clue as to what that means:(

The file: officeav.dll is the DLL for the Office Plug-in option in
NAV. If you find a file named "officeav.dll" then the command I
provided will make sure it is no longer registered and still
functioning even though you've uninstalled NAV.

We've encountered numerous situations where even though NAV was
uninstalled the Office Plug-in option was still 'live' and
functioning.

Since you have reinstalled NAV, then go to Norton Options and in the
Miscellaneous section make sure "Enable Office Plug-in" is turned off.
Even if it is turned off, enable it, close NAV, return to the options
and turn it off. I've also found a few situations in which
uninstalling/reinstalling NAV left the Office Plug-in option
registered even though it appeared to be turned off in the Options.

Try re-registering the file associations again but this time use the
following steps:

1. Go to Start/Run
2. Click the Browse command and navigate to excel.exe
3. Back on the Run command add <space>/regserver at the end of the
path outside the quotes.

Depending on your version of Office and the installation location the
command would look something like:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\EXCEL.EXE" /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash

4. Do the same for winword.exe

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for

Nothing changed.

I've unloaded a few programs, including Norton 2004 and cleaned

respective programs open, and the following two dialog boxes
open...

First one...Micorsoft Word dialog box says:

Second Microsoft Word dialog box saying:
