Opening document

When I open a document, another document name is created in my files list,
but named a little differently. The first two letters are missing and
replaced with the symbols ~$, as in when I open the file Agg burglary charge,
it immediately creates a file called ~$g burglary charge while I have the
other doc open, and it stays in my list files when I close the original
document. When I try to open the new document that was created, it contains
letters and squares. What is this? How can I stop this?

They are temp files that should close when you save and close the original
document. If your document has been saved and closed, you can delete them
from the file list.
