Opening documents with formulas

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I have office 2008 and when I open a document in word containing formulas made in windows word it does´t recognize the formulas and different symbols appear without being near to the original formula.

What can I do?

Apply all the latest updates to Office 2008.

That should fix it.
