Opening .docx in 2007, and .doc in 2003

Hi Guys,

I have recently installed Office 2007 B2, and really like it.

My Question: is it possible to assign the different file types to different
editions of MS Office? So that in My Computer / Explorer, if I dbl click a
2003 file, it opens in Office 2003, and .docx files open in 2007.

Is this possible? Thanks for any help.

Yes, but that is more a problem than a supported configuration. If you
run detect & repair for Office 2003, it should restore the doc extension
to Word 2003.

That is very helpful, thanks very much.

I have found this restores .doc to word 2003, but have not had any luck with
..xls to excel 2003 using this method - any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

Not really. As I said this is an unsupported configuration.

Yep. In Windows Explorer, choose Tools - Folder Options - File Types tab.
Find the DOC extension in the list, and click on Change. Note that Word
might be listed under Programs, but it doesn't say which version it is!

Instead, click on Browse. Browse to the location of winword.exe in the
Office11 folder (can vary depending on how you installed, but probably in
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11). Click on winword.exe, and click on
Open.

Back in the Open With dialog, make sure Always use the selected program...
box is checked,then click OK.

Back in Folder options, you probably don't need to do this for the docx and
docm files. They're likely already assigned to Word 12. But, you can do it
if you just want to make sure.
