Opening Excel 2007 files

Hi folks, I'm a silver surfer so don't get to techie with me on this please,
but I am having problems with the Excel bit of my recently loaded Office Home
and Student2007 package. In order to open a new excel 2007 file or one that I
have created from scratch in 2007, I have to first open one that I originally
created in my previous Office package (2003 I think. Now removed of course).
The same applies where I have resaved the old 2003 as a 2007. I've run the
diagnostics but nothing came up. An irritation rather than a show stopper but
i'd like to sort it out.
Any thoughts?

You start Excel 2007 and open a file created in 2007, what happens?
Or in explorer you doble click on an Excel 2007 cretaed file, what happens?

DL thank you for responding. Slight embarrasment now as when I went into
excel to check the precisely what happens before responding to you I find
that the excel problem has apparently rectified itself. However, I now seem
to have a similar problem with Word.

Using Explorer I locate the .docx file and double click. The egg-timer
flicks on and straight off and nothing else happens. If I double click on an
original Office file .doc (identified as 1997 - 2007 compatibility mode) then
Word 2007 starts and the file opens.

Unlike the Excel problem if I open Word first, then the 2007 files open
straight away.
