Opening Excel Generates "not enough memory" message

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I am trying to open Excel (Office 2008 for home and student version) on my Mac and keep getting "not enough memory" when it tries to open. I have downloaded every software update available. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What type of Mac? How much RAM does it have?

Are other programs running? Anything set to automatically launch on login?

What specific update level of OS X? What specific update level of Office?

Are you trying to launch by using the Dock icon, the program icon in the
Applications folder, by double-clicking a file icon... ?

I'm afraid we can't be of help unless you give us something to work with.

Thanks for your reply,

Here is the info:

iMac desktop 24"
1 GB RAM
No other programs open at the time
Nothing opens automatically when I turn computer on
OS X 3.0.4 (think this what you want)?
Update of Office 12.2.0
I have tried to open with dock icon and thru applications

Hope this is what you requested.

OK, that's a bit more helpful... See some comments below;

This could be a part of your problem. Leopard's minimum RAM requirement is
half of that, Office the other half. You really do need more RAM. Although I
would think you should still be able to launch Excel, 1 GB leaves no room
for error. Excel is probably the most demanding of the Office apps.

Log in while holding the Shift Key just to be sure... There can be things
going on that we might not be aware of :) See if that makes a difference.

I'm afraid that can't be right -- there is no such flavor. Your original
message indicated OS X Leopard 10.5 but that doesn't tell all... there
should be one more digit which is the most significant. If you aren't
certain just open the Apple Menu & select "About this Mac". Version 10.5.8
is the most current, so if your installation is lower than that I'd suggest
you get the Combo Update available here:

<http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update>

Even if you've already installed 10.5.8 via Apple's Software Update I'd
recommend getting the Combo & applying that. The Combos "refresh" a lot more
than the automatic updates which can help performance issues.
Update of Office 12.2.0

A 12.2.1 update was recently made available but that shouldn't have any
bearing on this issue

Once you have the OS X update applied run Disk Utility - Repair Disk
Permissions, then shut down your Mac for a few minutes. See how things work
using the Shift Key log in method described above.

If the problem persists:

Try running Excel form a new User Account to see if there's any difference.

Post back if you continue to have a problem... Another consideration may be
available disk space. How much free space do you have on your HD?
