Opening Files in Word

D

DS

Everytime I try to open a file in Word 2003, by clicking
on the word file itself word starts up but the document
does not load. It has a blank word screen with nothing on
it. If I go back to the file a click it again it loads up
all the way. I also can open files from the File open
menu. I just cannot open them by double clicking on the
file name. Can someone help me with this?? Thanks in
advance

Sounds like you need to recreate the file associations that are used
when you open a document outside the application. Go to Start/Run and
run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

Yes - that 'idea' would be providing you with the correct switch. :-(

Sorry, the /a is for troubleshooting. Try running this command
instead:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

If you can open the files using File/Open in Word but not by
double-clicking them then the problem is due to the file association.
Try restarting your computer and running the winword /r command again.

If that doesn't work then open the Windows Explorer, go to
Tools/Folder Options and on the File Types tab locate the file type
for Word Documents and delete it. Restart your computer and run the
winword /r command again. (Don't worry - I've deleted the Word file
association 100s of times :) )

I'm starting to run out of ideas here. This is odd.

What virus scanner do you use? Do you use Norton? If so then go to
Norton Options and in the Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable
Office Plug-in"
