Opening Files with the Same Name

MB

Hello. I have users who, when they had Office 2000, were able to open files
that had the same name. (The files were in different directories, of course).

Now, with Office 2002, they cannot open the files. Is there any way around
this, or do they have to rename each file?

Example: A file name of FINANCIAL SUMMARY is in each directory. The
Directories are named 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003.

Thank you!

Think they might be mistaken about what they 'remember'. Different
directories or not, that was only possible if you launched more than one
instance of Excel, and that hasn't changed.

I think those users either remember incorrectly or opened each workbook in
separate instances of excel.

If they want to open in separate instances by double clicking on the file in
windows explorer (say), they could try:

Tools|options|General tab|Ignore other applications (check it)

And be aware that turning this setting off sometimes gives errors with workbooks
that contain spaces in their path/name:

C:\my documents\excel\my book.xls

The error will look kind of like:
cannot find c:\my ..
then
cannot find documents\excel\my
then
cannot find book.xls

I try to have only one instance of excel running at a time. It makes
communicating between open workbooks much easier.
