opening files

When I open a file for MS Office I get the box that asks what I want
to do with the file so I select "open with ..." and the box that says
"do this for these file types automatically" is checked, yet I always
have to click "open".

Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Thanks!

Are you double-clicking on the file? You normally only get the "open with"
option when you right-click on a file....

In the last case I had an excel file attached to an email and I left
clicked once on "view". And I know it'll work if I save the file to
the hard drive, but I don't want to do that.

Well you should, because you should NOT edit Office documents direct from
the email......

These email attachments in question (word, excel) are from my work
email that I check from home, but do not d/l them to my home computer
as I am just reading them, NOT editing them.

Interesting. Why would you read and not edit if you found something wrong? I
don't see the point.....

I never said I read something wrong, nor did I say anything about
editing. All I am doing is reading it.
