Opening Publisher documents in word.

I have a manager who sends out documents in publisher format. My location
does not have publisher. I must send the file to an IT for conversion before
I can view it. I cannot equire my superior to change his file format, and I
am not permitted to purchase software. I have looked at the news group and
there are many posts from people with this problem. In business it does not
pay to use a format that others cannot see, or must do extra work for. Why
can I not open publisher documents in word?

You cannot open Publisher publications in Word because Publisher
publications are not compatible with Word and share a different extention.

Word doesn't open PowerPoint. Excel doesn't open Visio. Corel WordPerfect
doesn't open CorelDraw files for editing. I could go on and on. It's nearly
impossible to make all applications compatible. If that were the case, we
would only have one application.

Note that while Publisher can open Word Documents with objects, you do lose
much formatting.

Your best bet is to use Publisher and find away to get IT to install it.
Your manager should contact the IT department and let them know that you are
unable to be productive in an efficient manner with such restrictions.

You could suggest very politely that he convert his files to either
Microsoft Office Document Imaging format, or PDF format.

Because that's the way things are.
Import filters in Word are a Word problem, not a Publisher problem, by the
way.

PDF is the best route in these circumstances.

Brian, Are you the Microsoft spokesman? I am new here. I was under the
impression that a suggestion to Microsoft would be considered on the basis of
the responses it generates.

You may find it easier to ask your superior to authorize purchasing the
proper software for you to do your job than it will be to convince (or
complain about) Microsoft make a program conform to your restrictions.

Yes, and it's a good suggestion. But you also asked a question. I quote:

" Why
And I answered. Sorry for answering. And no, I am not a Microsoft
spokesman, employee or contractor.
