Opening separate files in excel...

When I want to open multiple files (by using the shift/ctrl key and selecting
the files), I cannot get them to open in separate windows, they all open in
one window and I have to go to Windows then select my file...Any
suggestions?? Thanks!!

If you are using Excel 2000 or later, try:
Tools | Options
Make sure you are looking at the View Tab.
Over near the right edge towards the top, you'll see a check boc for Windows
in Taskbar. Make sure it is checked.

If you are using Windows XP, you may have to Right-Click on your System
Clock and choose Properties and turn off Group Similar Task Bar Buttons by
removing its check.

Tried that and no luck...Let me make this clearer...When I open 2 files at
once it opens both up separately ok (2 separate files in taskbar)...when I
open excel (no worksheets open), it works fine as above, when I have a sheet
already open, it opens in the same window. I want to be able to open in
separate windows, it only does it when I already have a file open...

When you say separate windows, do you mean separate instances of excel?

If you mean just multiple icons on the taskbar, then tjtjjtjt's response worked
fine for me. (Excel is running just once for this.)

If you mean separate instances of excel, then I couldn't do this using xl2002
and win98. It looks like windows is sending one "command" to excel to open all
the selected files.

If you want separate instances of excel and can live with doing one file at a
time:

Tools|options|general|Check "ignore other applications"

But there are things that become more difficult with multiple instances--try
copy|paste special|formulas from one instance to another.
