Opening spreadsheets created in Excel 2004 in 2008

I have just "upgraded" to Office 2008 on my iMac 24" running Leopard 10.5. My spreadsheets created in Excel 2004 (all with the .xls at the end) do not open in 2008. Not only when I double-click, but when I open them through Finder or from within Excel 2004. I seem to see an "instant flashby) of something, but then just the plain blank Workbook1.

Anyone able to suggest a solution.

Your message indicates tht you can't open the files with 2008 *or* 2004 - is
that correct or is "...from within Excel 2004" an error?

Have you updated Office to 12.1.0 (SP1)?

Have you tried quitting all programs, repairing disk permissions, then
restarting your Mac?

The files are fine in Excel 2004; all the formulae work. But the file does not even open at all in Excel 2008. A momentary flicker, no error message, then nothing. File does not appear, whether I attempt to open the file via the menu or by double clicking or via the menu and the open button.

Thank you for the suggestion on restarting etc, but that has been done. Sorry I was not clear on implying there was a problem with 2004. I have no other copies of Office 2008 running. Excel and Office versions are 12.1.0

Check to see if any sheet tab names have a hyphen, slash, or backslash. If
so rename the sheet without these characters and try opening in 2008.

I just upgraded to 12.1.1 but the problem persists.

Open the files in 2004 and check if there are slashes, dashes or other
symbols in your sheet tab names, if so rename the tabs and use only
alphabeth characters.
Also try to re-save under a different name in 2004.
Have you tried to go to file in Excel 2008 and open it from the menu?
---------
Excel workbooks open correctly when you double-click the workbook or when
you download the workbook from a Web site.
This update fixes an issue that prevents Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac
Service Pack 1 (SP1) from opening workbooks when you double-click the
workbook or when you download the workbook from a Web site.
---------
According to the KB article of 12.1.1 the double clicking issue should be
fixed .....
