Opening Template

J

Josh

When someone tries to open a template created in word 2k
on a work 97 machine they get this error.
Word cannot open the document
Try one of the following:
On the file menu, click open the document
make sure the document has a .doc extension

I have read the artical on this topic and none of the
solutions help.
What to do.

word 97 has a hard time with the 2000. if possible before
you save the document on 2000, make sure that you change
the file type so that the user on 97 will be able to open
it from there end.

hope it helped.

How do I change the file type if I am creating a DOT.
I know I can save as a 97 .doc version. but I want a .DOT
file.

Hi Josh,

How are they trying to open the template? Are they using File/Open or
are they double-clicking the file from an Exploring window such as the
Desktop or My Computer?

Word 97 - Word 2003 use the same file format so there is no "Word 97"
type in the :"Save as type" list.

Also, I have yet to experience Word 97 having a 'hard time' with Word
2000.

acutally yes, it does have a hard time with word 2000,
because of the upgraded graphics, and added features, some
work and some don't.

In Word 2000 under Tools => Options => Save there is a box to check for
saved versions to be compatible with Word 97. Check it then save your
template.

Note that Word 2000+ nested tables can turn to something pretty bizzare if
opened in Word 97. You can still open such a doc or use such a template,
just with scrambled tables.

I don't quite follow what you mean by 'upgraded graphics'.

As for added features they will not prevent the document from being
opened.

If you would like to offer some examples of what you have encountered
I would be happy to review them. :)

both of those ways that you open the file is the same
thing. your opening it from the same location. it doesn't
matter how you open. it still has to do with compatiability

I seem to see the problem with the compatibility with word
2k template and then try to open it in 97.
These files are on a workgroup drive that I mapped in
office. so if you go to file, new you have the customized
templates that were created in 2k. But 97 users have not
been able to open them.

Josh

I am going to file, new. there are the templates that
someone created with 2k. I have the workgroup path mapped
to the template drive on are network. but 97 users can't
open it.

Tools => Options => Save (tab)
Check the box for Disable features introduced after Word 97.

It isn't part of the save or SaveAs dialog. It certainly is available for a
template file.
