Opening two files in two windows

This has bothered me for a while, but I just now decided to ask you experts.
I have Word 2003. When I open a second file (document), I only have one
Word window open. To jump back and forth between two documents, I have to
select the "file->name" instead of simply pressing alt-tab. I want to open
multiple documents in multiple windows--sometimes it is helpful to compare
two files on the screen at the same time. I can do this with Excel by
simply double clicking the shortcut--I then get a second window and can move
easily between two spreadsheets. I have tried the help feature, but no
luck. How can I get multiple Words on the screen at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

In Word 2002 or 2003, click on Tools | Options | View tab | check the
"Windows in Taskbar" box | OK.
