Opening Word 97 doc adds unwanted garbage text

Greetings, Here recently i've been trying to help a friend
who is having a issue with Word 97 adding a bunch of
unwanted garbage text to the bottom of the document when
it is opened.

Now this is a strange issue we can create and save a test
document. Then click on the recent history list and is it
fine. Or use windows explorer and double click the file
and it is fine there also. But if you click on the toolbar
in Word 97 as follows file then open and select the
document. It adds a bunch of off the wall text (like his
name multi times, where the doc is saved, computer name
and id, trash text, etc..)

I've never seen this. I've deleted the normal.dot file and
checked for Macros but no go.

If anyone could advise, i would be greatful

Go to File, Open and in the Open Type box select Word Documents and not
Recover Text from Any File. Note that this setting is sticky in Office 97
and you have to remember to change back - in later Office versions this is a
non-sticky setting.
