Opening word doc in Word, not Internet Explorer

I'm unable to configure Internet Explorer or Office to open attachments into
Word directly. When I open a attached document using mail2web or some other
webbased email browser the documents open in Internet Explorer with partial
Word capabilities until I check the appropriate toolbars.

I am running XP SP2 with Office 2003.

I would like some advice on what steps I need to take to set Word as my
defualt program for all word docs, regardless of where they originate, be it
as an attachment or saved on my HD.
