opening word documents

Hi! I have office 97 on my laptop. My computer crashed a
few months ago so I had to reinstall all of my programs
after I cleaned it. Prior to this occurance, I did not
have the problems below.

Now, every time I open a word document it says:
C:\\..My Documents/"name of document".doc is being used
by so and so(my name). Do you want to make a copy? (OK or
Cancel) --> I usually press cancel.

This does not make sense because it is not opened anywhere
else. Plus, even if I do make a copy, once I close the
copy and try to open it, I still get the same message as
above.

I can still edit the file, but it gets annoying to see
that message everytime I open a document.

Similarly, when I open an excel 97 file I get the message:
A document with the name "name of file.xls" is already
open. You cannot open two documents with the same name,
even if the documents are in different folders. To open
the second document, either close the document that's
currently open or rename one of the documents.

Tried it. I have no idea "where" the other document is
open because it does not show or appear to be open!!

Thanks for any help!!
PS: Operating system = Windows XP
