opening .xls files

I have a new copluter with Windows XP and MS works 7.0
with ms spreadsheet. How can I open .xls files?
Spreadsheet doesn't seem to recognize them.

Ian,

You can't.
You need to install Excel (a part of MS Office (not Works))
on your PC.

If all you want to do is view the file, you could use the free viewer from MS:
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx

An alternative: You may want to download a 60 meg file from OpenOffice.org.
I'm not sure it supports all the features that xl does, though.
