Opening .xls in Excel and not in IE

I've searched through the logs and it seems like what I want should
happen by default, but it isn't. When I generate an excel spreadsheet
I want it to open in the application and not in the browser. I've
tried playing with MIME types but to no avail. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Which OS are you using?

If OSX, select an .xls file, choose File/Get Info, and in the Open WIth
pane, select Excel. Click the Change All button.
