operate a scanner

does anyone know how (and if) i can start a scan operation on a scanner from
access code?
and if it's possible, can i send a filename and path for the new image to
the scanner?
i read about MODI for office 2003, but i'm using XP and the customer will
use a runtime instalation of access

You will have to do some investigation into the scanner's software
capabilities. I do not know if this idea will work, but it would be the
first thing I would try.
First, to start the scan, I would consider the Shell function to start the
app that runs the scanner. Then, I would see if that app will accept a
command line function to tell it the destination for the image.

I am trying to achieve the same thing and have been playing around with a
product called DBPix which seems quite promising. You can find it (and get a
trial version) www.ammara.com . Be interested to hear how you get on as I was
hoping to use PDF format for my scanned documents which this does not seem to
support.
