Operation Failed, Message deleted

One of my users has Outlook 2003. They occasional receive the message "The
Operation Failed" when trying to open emails. The e-mails then disappear from
their Inbox and are not in the deleted items folder. Outlook is connecting
to Exchange, but is also using local cache mode.

Does the behavior change if they disable Cached Exchange mode?
