Operation Failed???

I'm assisting several individuals with a problem that
occurs when they send a complex e-mail. It starts with
an e-mail that is sent to many (5-9) external
recipients. Then they add a pair or two of paragraphs of
message. And then they add four or five attachments.
These can be MS Word docs or MS Excel Workbooks.
The individual might open an attachment or two just to
check it and confirm that it is indeed the correct
attachment. They close out of the file and then click
the Send button.
Immediately they get the error message, "The Operation
Failed".

What happens next is that we create an empty e-mail,
copy and paste ALL the contents from the old e-mail into
the new e-mail and the newly created e-mail made from all
the old parts gets sent without incident.

I did some checking on a similar computer and found that
if the file remainded open, thus causing a file lock, a
warning message comes up to tell me that the file is open
and any changes I may have made will not saved into the
file I'm about to send. So if it were a file lock that
was causing the error, then I would not expect the "The
Operation Failed" error message.

Also since all the old parts are present in the new e-
mail, I do not suspect the individual pieces that are in
the e-mail. So this leaves me stumped. Any insights
would be appreciated on what would be the cause or how to
resolve this.
