Organize tasks as projects like a To Do List?

I'd like to organized my tasks like a To Do List. I'd like to number each
item for reference. What would be an efficient way to do this?

I think that you could go to Views and then either modify the current
view or another existing view or create a new view. Press the Fields
button. In the lower left corner, "select fields from:" "user-defined
fields in folder, press new, name your field, make it text or number;
then put it in each view where you want it.
