OS 10, VPN and a router.

I posted this question back in September. No solution yet.
I have used Outlook for years and have used a VPN connection for the
last year. I upgraded to OS 10.2.8, so I installed the Cisco VPN
client. I can get the VPN to work, but Outlook 2001 will not connect.
If I unplug the SMC router and plug my laptop directly into the Cable
modem, then Outlook works over the VPN.
Other info: I am not using wireless. So the only difference is having
a router in between me and the cable modem. I tried it with the
Firewall turned off, no difference. I made sure the Cisco client had
the NAT option checked, no difference.
If I boot into OS 9, it works great with the router connected.
Searching in this forum I found these other users with the same issue:

Why is Outlook 2001 not working with OS 10 in this situation?
