OT but effective

Hi Folks,

Just a little story about people hot linking to pictures. I really don't
mind if people want to use pictures I have on my sites if they ask first. I
also don't even mind if they take them and use them without asking. What I
*do* mind is when they hot link to them stealing bandwidth from my servers.
I just had a case where I found an area that was hot linking to 12 of them,
I asked nicely for them to remove them..no response..I then substituted an
image for all 12 to have them removed...no response except for someone
laughing about it. Well then I finally did a search for some "not so nice
pictures" and found one that would make Larry Flynt blush. When I then
substituted that picture for the 12 being hot linked to...they were removed
in a matter of minutes!! :)

Hi Joe,

I know what you mean, it happens to me all the time, and I usually do the same thing you do, or rename the image files to create dead links.

When ever I see a spike in my traffic, I am usually assured it is a newsgroup posting the images.

Hi JDR,

I was strictly going the rename route for awhile..but then it just adds to
error messages in the log. I make enough of those on my own..without adding
a few more! :)

Hey Joe,

You know the sad thing about it, is we actually have to waste our time doing this. I know I would much rather be doing other things, as you would, but if we have to waste our time, then the offending sites need to also. Maybe they will take measures down the road to revent it.
