[OT NEWS] Apple launches Bootcamp

Apple has introduced an official way to run XP on Intel Macs--it's called
Bootcamp

This new, free, downloadable software by Apple will allow easy partitioning
and setup of XP
on new Intel Macs. It will allow a choice at boot time by holding down the
Option key, allowing booting into EITHER Mac OSX OR XP.

A momentous day in Mac history!

P.S. I still favor a virtualization scheme so I don't have to reboot, but
by using Bootcamp and making the partition FAT32, I presume I can still
exchange files back and forth easily.

It sounds like a great idea, and it'll definitely ease the transition for
many PC users. Apple's bitchy comments on that particular website (read the
right-hand column) made me laugh.

I think the word you are looking for is "snarky." ;-)

I wonder if they will support booting Vista also?

Suppose this revelation had anything to do with the delay of Vista?

I would guess so. It should be able to support Linux as well (but
without the specific drivers which Apple provides for WinXP).

That's interesting, though virtualization (running XP *in* MacOS X)
would be tremendously better as far as I am concerned. Having to reboot
every time you need to get something done in XP is a pain,

FWIW....just finished the complete install of Boot Camp and WinXP Pro on my
MacBook Pro....everything went completely without a hitch....

That's my take. The advantage of VPC is being able to work back and
forth from Mac OS to XP. Might as well just buy a cheap PC otherwise.

I agree! And I foresee a time when Windows will run on a Mac system much
like Classic does now. It'll be transparent until you need it and then
simply double-clicking on a .exe file will launch in the Windows virtual
machine while appearing to be just another application window.

I think Apple knows that folks want drag-n-drop between both systems,
full accessibility to files for both systems and especially the ability
to play Windows-only games. It's probably just a matter of time--sooner
than later, though.

I will say that this is good for those PC users who secretly lust for a
Mac. Give 'em a little time on it, they won't go back.

I have no use for eXtra Pitiful, but it sure makes Dell and the rest
look like shit. Their cheap, crappy junk only does one thing.

Gregg,

Did you format the partition as FAT32? If so, how does this partition
"appear" under OS X? Does it show up under "Network," or is it not visible?

Just curious as I know NTFS is read-only from OS X, but FAT32 is read/write.
Of course, XP can't see the HFS+ drive (without additional software at
least).

Let us know how it goes. I haven't put out the cash yet for an Intel Mac,
but with luck will "soon.'

Mark:

I didf a FAT32 format specifically so I can move files back and forth
between OSX and XP.

The FAT32 partition shows up as a logical drive on both the OSX desktop and
within the Finder....fully navigable.

It's a delivery system for those addicted to Windows. ;-)

Good to know, Gregg. Thanks for the update!
