Other projects and commitments

we are running a script in our own mpp template..we are encoutering issue
when we try to open a saved/published plan in PWA already..the plan opened
from office project always add the "Other projects and commitments" in the
Resource Usage view. how can we prevent this from happening..and what is the
purpose of this if there is any..

another question is when we open again the saved/published plan in PWA..the
custom columns/custom view we have applied in our template is set to
default..the custom columns are hidden already and the default columns is
displayed instead (ex. our custom view for team members will be the same as
Resource Sheet view already)..

hope you can answer my questions soon..

many thanks!

Hi Clinks63,

You are loading Summary Resource Assignments. Within Project, select Tools
| Enterprise Options | Project Server Accounts. Select Manually control the
connection state, and restart project.

Uncheck the Load Summary Resource Assignments checkbox.

You can then these the connection state back to automatic if necessary.

Hi Clinks, I need clarification about pt 2. When you say open in PWA, do
you mean Editing the project in the browser, or Editing in Project Pro via
PWA, or clicking on the project and showing a view within PWA. I'm not sure
which Template you are referencing in your description, there are two in my
mind, Project Pro templates and WSS templates....

thanks..we have a customized mpp template (with custom views and column on
those views) which we used for publishing via project pro (client)..

when we save/publish a plan (a local file) for the first time in project
server via project pro the custom views/columns will be retained..

but the problems happen when we try to open again a saved/published plan
from project server via project pro (note that we are not using PWA for
saving/publishing/republishing)..the custom views are still there but the
columns there are reverted back to a default view (ex. Custom View 01 =
Resource Sheet view already)..though the values are still retained but we
have to unhide the columns from our custom view..

hope i have explained this clear..THANKS!

My best guess from reading your post is that you are making column changes
on a view that is already as an enterprise view on Project Server. The
enterprise view has the columns visible and anytime you open the schedule
the view will pull the definition of the view including, filter, group and
which columns to display from the enterprise.

I would make sure that your custom view is not already existing in the
enterprise global and even go as far as making sure that your custom view
isn't using a table that is already in the enterprise global as this would
be a problem as well.

i'm sorry for this but we actually did not created a custom column but
instead we set a "Title" for existing columns ex. "Field Name: Group; Title:
Role".

and then we have created a new view that include those columns..

but what happens to that view when opened as described below for project
server, is being set to default view (does it have something to do with
"Screen"?)..

thanks again.. :)

I'm having a hard time understanding the scenario. So I'll just give you
some tips here:

If you want to create a new local view, you should create first a new local
table and then when you create the view, set the new table in the view
definition. Same goes for filters and groups if you apply those.

Best practice is to prepend the names your local tables, filters, groups and
views the same so you know which ones apply to which views.

As for the default view? The default view for a new project will always be
the local "Gantt" view. Once you save a project, the view you save with is
the view that will come up the next time you open the schedule. If you save
the schedule last while in an enterprise view, the enterprise view will open
next time and will pull the view definition from the enterprise global each
time you open the schedule. So changes you might make to the enterprise
view definition in the schedule will never be retained, makes sense?

I'll try to explain one more time.. :)

- I created a new local project plan (*.mpp) through Office Project. I'm
working offline.

- I created a view from View > More Views... > New > Single View

- Name: MyCustomView, Screen: Resource Sheet, Table: Entry, Group: Np Group,
Filter: All Resources

- View 1: Hide all columns except Resource Name and Group

- View 1: Unhide column Email Address

- Set Title to columns: Name = MyCustomResourceName, Group =
MyCustomGroupName, Email Adress = Email Address*

- Save mpp to local file system

- Open Office Project and connect to a PWA site

- Open the local mpp stated above

- Populate fields and then save to PWA

- Publish

The problem happens when I opened the project plan online. The view i have
created will be reset to the default view. For this scenario it will look
like the default Resource Sheet view. The unhiding/hiding and setting title
of the columns will be reverted as if i did not customized MyCustomView.

hope anyone can reply soon. many thanks!

You need to create a custom Table for your new custom View. Customize the
new Table the way you want (columns, column Titles, etc.) and include it in
the View. This should solve your problems. Hope this helps.
