Updated info. the trouble files are being created by someone using Office 2003 Standard on an XP SP2 computer. I've been able to identify two people using Office 2008 on their Macs having this problem.

We're working on a fix for this. We believe it's related to window focus,
which would explain why some people encounter this and others don't, and why
we have usually been unable to reproduce the problem when customers who have
encountered it send us their files. Until we come up with a fix, the best
advice I have is -- when you know a certain set of steps will lead to the
Out of Memory alert -- to slightly modify your steps prior to the point
where Excel would generally throw up the memory alert. Since we think it's
related to windowing, an example would be to click on the desktop or another
application, or to minimize then maximize the workbook window prior to the
point when you would usually hit the alert. I know this is a terrible
workaround and won't help if you don't already know you're about to hit the
memory alert. But it may help some people until we find and release a solid
fix.

Thanks,

Pat
