Outbox is empty but Send And Receive has 2 emails to go

I have a 2003 client and there is nothing in the outbox.
When I press send and receive it says it is trying to
send 2 emails and locks up. The error talks about
connectivity to the mail server- but it makes no sense -

Any ideas???
