Outline Numbering for Headings in 2007

F

Frank Harper

We have recently upgraded to Office 2007.

I ihave a number of documents that use outline number style headings.
i.e.

1
1.1
1.2
2
2.1
2.2
3
3.1
3.2
etc.

When I try to create a new document and set up the heading styles
using the outline numbering style, it is not available as an option in
the Paragraph Numbering section of the Modify Style dialog box.

Does anyone know how to set this up?

Thanks in advance

To quickly create heading numbering in Word 2007: On the Home tab of the
ribbon, click Multilevel List, and then click the "1 Heading 1 1.1 Heading
2" numbering scheme.

To edit such a numbered list (or a list created in a previous version of
Word): Place the insertion point in the first top-level paragraph (for
example, in the first Heading 1 paragraph if you are dealing with heading
numbering). Then click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel
List. Word displays a dialog box similar to the Customize Outline Numbered
List dialog of previous versions (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html).

Note that the safest way to set up numbered lists in Word 2007 is to create
a list style, via Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New List Style.
Specify a name for the list style, and set its properties via Format,
Numbering; for example, you can attach paragraph styles to each numbering
level.

Once it has been created, the list style is shown under the "List Styles"
heading at Home tab | Multilevel List. You can apply the style to text by
clicking it, but if you associated it with paragraph styles, it will be
easier to apply the relevant paragraph styles directly to text.

To edit a list style, just right-click its icon and choose Modify from the
context menu. Word displays the Modify Style dialog box.

Curiously, I had to discover the method for setting a numbering scheme on
heading styles myself yesterday.

Let me say that it took me 1 hour to do!

Historically, you did this by modifying a Style. In Office 2007, you cannot
do this by modifying a style. That sucks BIG TIME.

Somehow the styles have properties set that are not editable via the style
editor which is plain silly.

The help does kind of tell you to modify the style on the Home ribbon, but
logic tells you to ignore that as you want to modify a heading style....

Personally I think Word 2007 needs changing here to be logically consistent
with previous releases.

You can still modify numbering schemes via styles, not just via paragraph
styles. As I wrote, list styles allow you to set all numbering options and
to assign paragraph styles to the numbering levels.

I just moved onto word 2007.

I agree with previous comment that word 2007 is inconsistent.
Modify numbering style via Modify Style DOES NOT provide multilevel
numbering option. The dialog box is just for single numbering only.

The user interface has certainly changed, but you can still define the
numbering scheme(s) that you want; see the previous messages in this thread.
