outline numbering

I have encountered a problem while testing for a legal
processing position. They ask me to modify an existing
style to look a certain way. It is in outline form, and
they want me to use legal numbering and outline.

The layout is

Article I
Rules and regulations

Section 1.1 (a) bleh bleh bleh

The problem is that they are separating Article I into
Heading 1.. and Section 1.1 and (a) into Heading 2
style. The layout that they want me to use in the
outline isn't possible. I keep trying to arrange it, but
it wants to include Article in everything I do?

I would really appreciate help on this subject.

Which version of Word is being used?

It sounds like they want two styles in one paragraph. This can be done (sort
of) but the methods depend on which version is in use.

Also, automatic numbering can be very difficult. See: How to create numbered
headings or outline numbering in a Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

I would want to know that the procedures outlined there were followed or how
the numbering was set before I started messing with it.
