outline / printing

I like using outlines -- purely to plan, not to manage the structure of my articles.

My problem is that when I print the outlines, they do not print in "outline" form. (Staggered indenting, etc.) They print left-justified, with different fonts representing different "layers."

I want the printed outline to look like the outline on the screen. (Which looks like the classic outline you learned about in 7th grade.)

How can I do this?

What version of Word?

Are you using Outline View, or setting up Outline Numbering?

Assuming you are using Outline View, turn off Show Formatting on the
Outline Toolbar. Then print directly from Outline View--do not print
preview along the way--and you should get what you see, which should be
indented.

I'm using Word for Mac, 2001, and using Outline View.

I turned off Show Formatting (clicking the "paragraph" icon, right?) and remained in Outline View. Same problem.

The icon you need to click is the one showing a big A and a small A.

I turned off formatting using the A/A icon; same problem.

Outline view prints an un-indented "outline" with different fonts for each line--no outline structure whatsoever. I'm hoping for a wysiwyg printout of the outline I've created on my screen.

Anyone have any other thoughts on why I can't print an outline that looks like an outline (indents, etc.), using outline view?

I don't know if we can begin to answer your question until you are able to
answer one for us...

Office 2001 runs natively in Mac OS 7.5 - 9.x and requires Classic support
in OS X. OS 9.x & earlier and Classic are *not* supported in Leopard or on
Intel Macs, so:

How are you managing to use 2001 *at all* on an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5?

Alllllllrighty Then:) Try the following:

1- Launch Word & in a new blank doc go to Outline View,

2- Type a short outline of several levels,

3- Go to File> Print & see what the Quick Preview in the lower left shows

4- If it appears as you want, try printing it from there

If step #3 doesn't display in the indented manner or if it does but doesn't
print as it looked in QP post back with exactly what does occur. Include the
specific level of Office X (10.1.9?). Also describe exactly how you are
promoting & demoting the items in your outline.

If the above does go well it suggests the doc you were previously working
with may be corrupt.

Mirabile dictu ... that worked! Many thanks; this outlining conundrum has been bugging me for ages.

I look forward to exploring the outlining power others have described in other forum discussions.

Congrats! As you can now see, in order to print the indented outline the
trick revolves around doing so *directly* from Outline View unless you
actually apply an Outline Level Style to the text.

Not that this matters, since I have a workaround--but I seemed to discover that I *can't* print directly from outline view (that is, and get the indented outline I want)? I can only get it by printing via the "quick preview."

Is that a glitch, or am I missing something?

What's the difference between printing directly from outline view and
via the quick preview?

Hmm. I went back to try this again and once again it's not working.

I created an outline of several levels using outline view. Then I go to file>print and click the print button. I get the unformatted outline.

Before clicking print, I have the option to "preview"; now when I click on that I see, yes, the unformatted outline.

The one time it worked, I did file>print and had the option of clicking on "Quick Preview." I then printed directly from that window.

Thoughts on what I'm doing wrong -- or did right that one time?

Hello C -

The good news is that you may not be as crazy as you think:)

It is starting to look like there may be some sort of inconsistency in
Leopard. I've done this a thousand times in prior versions (including
Windows) and just succeeded in Tiger here on my home system.

However, when I first saw your most recent post I was at work on my MBP
running 10.5.0 & was experiencing the same behavior you're reporting. I'll
have a closer look as soon as I can. In the meanwhile:

Anyone running Leopard who wants to do a little experimentation please feel
free to chime in:)
